There is something about beauty and a smooth face. You would agree we often feel ‘not-so-beautiful’ when or faces don’t look or feel smooth.
What are the factors that make a ‘not-so-smooth’ face? Acne, bumps, dark spots or dark patches, sun burns, chapped skin and lips, fine lines or dark circles around the eyes, wrinkles, dry or flaky skin … have I left anyone out?
When you have any or a combination of these, you are not having your best look. You want a smooth, glowing and youthful skin. When your face is smooth you need less makeup to achieve a beautiful daily look.
I made a post on how to make your own coconut oil at home (you can find it here) and I promised to answer a mum’s question on how to use coconut oil for a smooth face.
Can coconut oil alone help you achieve a smooth face? The answer is no. But you will find just how much this all natural, edible, sweet smelling oil can contribute in helping you achieve a smooth face and a more beautiful you, and I’m hoping you will make it a part of your skin care products starting now:
Your face needs a moisturizer and you have an excellent one in coconut oil. It melts on the skin as soon as you apply it easily seeping into the pores of your skin, moisturizing deeply and thoroughly.
Here’s what you do: After washing your face with a mild cleanser and drying it lightly with a towel, apply coconut oil to your face. You need only a small amount since the oil spreads really well. Apply it on the face and neck area, gently massaging it in. Wait for about 5 minutes for the oil to absorb into the skin, and wipe away any excess with a soft cotton towel. Then follow with your day or night cream.
For oily skin, apply your coconut oil liberally on the face and neck after washing with a mild soap. Leave it on for 10 minutes. Wash with warm water and dry with a soft towel. Repeat this for several days to condition your skin. You may experience an initial breakout of acne, but you can ignore it unless it is too severe. Your skin would eventually reduce sebum secretion.
Ideal for deep cleansing
It is important for skin health to deep cleanse our face from time to time. Coconut oil is a gentle, yet thorough cleanser. It softens the keratin caps and makes exfoliation much easier. The light, spreading texture of coconut oil enables it to seep into the hair follicles and dissolve the hardened sebum, bringing it up to the skin surface.
Mix 2 Tbsp almond flour or oatmeal with enough coconut oil to make a thick paste and apply on the face, gently massaging in a circular motion. For oily skin you can add a teaspoonful of lemon juice or a few drops of lemon oil to the mixture. Use a warmed wet towel to cover your face for 10-15 minutes or, better still, steam your face for five minutes. This will open up all the skin pores and help get rid of the accumulated dirt debris softened by the oil. Wash it off with mild soap and warm water.
For your facial scrub, mix brown sugar with some coconut oil (olive will do) and scrub gently in a circular motion to remove dead cell ad reveal a smooth glowing skin. Make sure the paste is smooth to avoid scratches from sugar grains.
Natural makeup remover
To get rid of left over makeup after cleansing, we often traumatize the soft skin on the face in the process, especially the sensitive area around the eyes increasing the chances of fine lines and wrinkles.
When your makeup will not go off after normal cleansing, apply coconut oil all over your face with a cotton ball. Leave it on for 5 minutes and wash off with warm water and mild soap. Most of the makeup should be gone, but you should again apply coconut oil to do a thorough cleaning.
For eye makeup removal, keep your eyes tightly closed, apply some coconut oil on your cotton pads and place over them. Within a few minutes, the oil will dissolve waterproof mascara and eyeliner so that you can gently wipe them off. If coconut oil gets into the eyes, it may sting a bit, but it is perfectly safe.
Add some vitamin E to coconut oil and you have your home made eye cream.
Protection from sunburn
We all absolutely hate sunburns but living in this part of the world we must take extra care to protect ourselves from the intense radiation from the sun. Coconut oil having SPF 4 may not keep you safe during a full day on the beach, but if you apply it on your skin before stepping out of the house, you can escape the effects of solar radiation during brief periods out in the sun. Also, if you have been in the sun without any kind of protection, applying coconut oil immediately afterward reduces the damage and soothes the burnt skin and goes to work right away to reduce inflammation and pain.
Reduces facial wrinkles and premature ageing
Fine lines and wrinkles can mar the smoothness and youthful look of facial skin. Coconut oil can preserve the smoothness and suppleness of the face by penetrating deep into the skin and ensuring timely repair of the collagen layer and promoting collagen formation.
Soothe chapped lips/skin
Coconut oil makes an excellent lip balm on its own, but can be mixed with different herbal extracts or essential oils to suit your taste. It can help relieve chapped and cracked skin or lips giving you a smoother feel. All you do is apply a few drops of oil on your finger tips and apply where necessary.
The antibacterial properties of coconut oil help protect the skin from potential pathogens. Using coconut oil regularly, for both moisturizing and deep cleansing, can keep the bacterial populations under control and reducing the appearance of acne. The antimicrobial action of coconut oil extends to fungal infections of the skin too.
Just take a look at your face in the mirror and see where exactly you need this wonder oil to help you improve the look of your skin, and then give it a try. Like all other things in life you will need to be patient and consistent to achieve your desired results. Skin conditions differ and so is the time it will take to see visible results, for some it might be under a week, others several weeks. But if you make coconut oil a part of your skin care regime your face will get softer, smoother and supple too such that you will look at the mirror and you will be pleased!
